 Cactus & Succulent Society

About Us

The South Coast Cactus and Succulent Society is an affiliate of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America (CSSA). It was formed in 1972 to promote an interest in and an appreciation of cacti and other succulents. In addition to learning more about cacti and succulents, club members are encouraged to show and exhibit their plants.  But an unstated purpose is to allow succulents enthusiasts to share their knowledge and experiences, and have fun doing it.

President’s Message

As I started my fourth year as Club President, the roster listed 87 members, up 5 from a year ago.

Although the same folks are filling the Officer position they held 3 years ago, new members are now filling several Committee Chair positions. I believe it is important that Officers and Chairs change after an incumbent has filled the post for 2-4 years. New people mean new ideas and renewed energy.

I feel the Society has an obligation to the community in the area of education. This year we will sponsor our third consecutive public lecture on "Landscaping with Succulents" in July of 2010. We plan on hosting such an event annually.

Although there has not been a lot of support to begin tours, I still think group tours to local gardens and nurseries are a good idea that should not be discarded. We will revisit this option later this year.

Our annual show and sale continues to provide the funds to support all Club activities, including our Newsletter, programs and free plant activities.

We have been working on a revised Constitution and By-laws for a couple of years now. It has undergone several revisions, but I feel now is the time to seek membership comment. I hope some of you will take the time to review it using the link on our home page, and send me your thoughts and suggestions. This document is important because it contains our "corporate memory".

I look forward to more challenges and successes this coming year.
